ORS/The Exchange and SJC Department of Environmental Stewardship Host Hazardous Waste Roundup Event
SAN JUAN COUNTY, WA – September 23, 2026. San Juan County Department of Environmental Stewardship and ORS/The Exchange are hosting a hazardous waste round-up collection event, giving island residents the chance to legally and responsibly dispose of poisonous, flammable, corrosive, or otherwise hazardous materials. The event will take place October 3rd from 10 am – 2 pm at The Exchange, 3398 Orcas Rd.
Proper disposal protects community health, keeps harmful chemicals out of local drinking water, and safeguards the workers who handle these materials.
“Hazardous materials including pesticides, chemicals, and batteries have no place in household garbage. When these items end up in the regular trash, they can make their way onto our ferries where a spill or fire could put passengers, crew, and our marine environment at serious risk. This round-up event gives households on Orcas a safe, free, and easy alternative,” said Katie Fleming, Solid Waste Program Coordinator, San Juan County Department of Environmental Stewardship.
There is no charge for San Juan County residents disposing of 25 gallons or less of hazardous waste (please bring materials in containers that are no larger than 5 gallons). Disposal is funded in part by the Local Solid Waste Financial Assistance grant from the WA Department of Ecology and the San Juan County Solid Waste Program.
While The Exchange hosts several cleanup events during the year, this is the ONLY event where liquid fuels (gasoline, kerosene, lamp oils etc.) are accepted.
