Climavision Opens Its Private Radar Network and Forecasting Platform to AI Data Centers Facing 2027 Deadline

As PJM and federal regulators press data centers to secure their own power, Climavision opens its 15-state radar network and forecasting to large energy users.

LOUISVILLE, KY, UNITED STATES, September 10, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Climavision is opening its private radar network and high-resolution forecasting platform to AI data centers and the utilities and grid operators that serve them. The move is in response to mounting stress on the grid from rising AI use and extreme weather. It follows a proposal from PJM, the nation's largest grid operator, that would require data centers and other large electricity users to secure their own power by June 2027. Climavision already supplies weather intelligence to government agencies, utilities and energy traders across rural areas the federal network does not reach. For facilities that cannot afford to go dark, access to decision-grade weather intelligence is becoming a condition of staying online.

The nation's grid was set up for predictable peaks. AI load is running around the clock.

Across the U.S. grid, two things are shifting at once. Wind and solar, two sources the weather controls, now supply a growing share of the country's power generation. Meanwhile, AI load runs flat around the clock rather than in the predictable peaks utilities built their systems around.

The strain is already showing. Twice this year, PJM has asked the U.S. Department of Energy for emergency authority to curtail data centers rather than cut power to homes and businesses. It’s not alone: FERC has now directed all six U.S. grid operators to address how they connect large loads. Under PJM's new proposal, data centers could avoid curtailment by bringing their own qualifying capacity: new power generation, storage, demand response, capacity uprates or fuel-switching. Every one of those options is weather-exposed. Wind and solar output is set by conditions at the site. And even gas is temperature-sensitive: turbine output drops in heat, and supply tightens in a deep freeze. There is no compliance path that is not also a weather problem.

Data centers are built where weather radar reaches. The power that runs them isn't.

Data centers are often set up near metro areas that already have the infrastructure they need. The wind farms, solar farms and transmission corridors that keep them online go up where land is cheap, and where federal radar coverage is thin. Climavision's more than 30 radars were built for these weather blind spots. Within them, it tracks the layer the federal network covers least: the lowest few thousand feet of the atmosphere. Weather events that happen in this layer determine what a turbine or a solar panel actually produces.

Across all 50 states, Climavision's forecasting platform further closes the gap by combining its radar observations with public datasets, commercial sources and a customer's own sensors, producing high-resolution forecasts for specific wind farms, substations or campuses rather than regional averages.

Weather has long been seen as a strain on the grid. Now it's a solution to optimizing it.

Climavision will work directly with data centers and their utilities to put weather intelligence at the point of decision, so operators can both optimize the power available to them and protect the infrastructure that produces and delivers it:

- Renewable power can be planned around with precision. Solar alone met nearly a third of demand during Texas's record-setting peak hour in July, but wind and solar only generate when conditions allow. Climavision turns renewable supply into something an operator can schedule against by forecasting the low-altitude conditions that determine production, rather than estimating those variables from broad regional models.

- Less money spent on spare capacity that may never get used. Better solar forecasts alone cut the spare capacity operators hold against forecast error by 30%. For a data center deciding how much power to line up, that is the difference between meeting the requirement and paying for far more than it needs.

- Batteries and backup that fire at the right moment. A battery is only as valuable as its ability to charge and discharge at the right time, and agreements to cut power use during peaks only pay off if the peak is seen coming. Both depend on knowing what the weather will do next.

- Protect the hardware that actually produces the power. Turbines, inverters, substations and transmission lines are exposed in a way the data hall is not. Climavision's HailCast, TornadoCast and LightningCast product suite delivers hail, tornado and lightning warnings up to 30 minutes ahead, helping operators protect the physical assets that support the grid, including the data center facilities themselves.

CenterPoint Energy selected Climavision in 2025 to integrate weather intelligence into its grid operations, part of a resilience push following damage from Hurricane Beryl in 2024. Enverus uses Climavision's forecasts to give energy traders sharper weather data behind their positions. In April the two companies published an analysis showing how earlier weather signals offered traders a window ahead of January's natural gas price spike.
